VERO BEACH — The Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County has presented a plan to build a community sailing center on the vacant land on the Vero Beach Electric Power Plant property adjacent to the Indian River Lagoon.

The plans were presented at the Special Call City Council meeting on April 17.

The sailing center would include the construction of a 10,000-square-foot, two-story building, installation of floating docks, ramps and parking to facilitate public access to the lagoon for small watercraft including sailboats, kayaks and paddleboards. The plan contemplates housing operations for youth sailing, adult sailing, sailboat rental and kayak and canoe concessions. Youth Sailing Foundation proposes to manage the operation at no charge to the city and to construct the building and maintain it entirely through private donations.
